Awe. You know it when you feel it, but why do you feel it? Why does it matter? Consider these questions as you embark upon this challenge.
First, do the following in whatever order you’d like:
- Read Prof. Dacher Keltner’s article “Why Do We Feel Awe?”
- Read the article “Can Awe Boost Health?” by Yasmin Anwar or watch at least one of the videos on awe from the Greater Good Science Center.
- Visit an outdoor place where you think you’ll be able to feel some degree of awe safely and comfortably. This doesn’t have to be a spectacular landscape with mind-blowing scenery. You might visit a place where old trees or vivid autumn color or vast openness awe you. Maybe this is even a chance to rethink the experience of awe. If you go somewhere you thought would be great only to find you just aren’t feeling it, no worries! Reflect upon why you thought you’d feel awe but didn’t.
